#1: Start a business

It was the Fall of 2008 amidst a growing recession, Al and I sat in front of the television staring at the news just before leaving for work. We were living in Aspen, Colorado working for a real estate conglomerate partially (a good partial) financed by Lehman Brothers. We were in trouble. There were layoffs, and more layoffs and we began talking. Were we next? What would we do on one income or no income? Aspen is not a cheap town to live in and we would definitely need to relocate. But to where? We began formulating a plan to move to the west cost of Florida which we had become familiar with through his parents’ second home. On the subject of what to do, no...

#173: Eat at the world’s greatest restaurants (Garces Trading Company

To me, some of the best culinary experiences transpose me to a different time and place. I like to think that I’m sitting in a café amongst the vineyards of France or Italy outside in the sunshine and warmth. That’s hard to recreate on a hot and humid street in downtown Philadelphia, but somehow Jose Garces accomplished it. Jose Garces is most famous for his win on The Next Iron Chef, but he has been operating Garces Trading Company on Locust Street in Philadelphia since 2009. The café not only contains a list of unique and fresh ingredients on their menu, but also a boutique wine and cheese shop. You can sit inside among the shoppers of the store or...

#10: Save an animal’s life

“You love the dog more than me.” That is the most common complaint I hear out of my husband’s mouth, and to be honest. Sometimes I do. What’s not to love about this face? While we were living in Aspen I started craving the attention you can only receive from a four-legged friend. But living in a 900 square foot basement apartment was not really conducive to raising a puppy. After moving to Naples, I immediately got to work on finding our new best friend. I have always believed in animal rescue, ever since I can remember my family (and later I) had rescued Greyhounds, Golden Retrievers, rabbits, cats and even horses. I can’t deny it, rescuing...

#14: Finally hit my goal weight (135)

I haven’t seen the numbers ’135′ on a scale since probably the beginning of college. I have never considered myself overweight and have maintained good physical condition over the last ten years by running, hiking, and attending yoga classes. But I’ve always had that little ‘extra’ weight. I made it my goal this year to finally rid myself of it and get back to a weight and number I feel comfortable and confident with. Today, on Friday July 7th the scale read 135 pounds. Go me! I have been on the Dukan Diet – made famous by Kate Middleton’s use of it before the royal wedding – for just under 2 months now. It has become...

#57: Pose like Rocky in Front of the Art Museum

Visiting the city of Brotherly Love (and the city I grew up in) I decided to get some items checked off the bucket list that should have been accomplished a long time ago. It’s funny when you grow up in a place you take it for granted and never appreciate what surrounds you. My husband and I both came to despise Philadelphia after years of living/working there, maybe it was the smog, the people or perpetual rain. But we never appreciated what it had to offer. All in the last five years we’ve seen the Betty Ross house, walked the historic streets, and now visited the Art Museum. As for my 57th goal, “pose like Rocky,” I made a slight adjustment. I...
